America is undergoing one of the greatest periods of transformation in history. Not unlike the powerful changes caused by the industrial revolution that shaped the 19th and 20th centuries, today, globalization is shaping the 21st century and the United States is leading the way.
The increasing global nature of business and supply-chain relationships has had a tremendous impact on U.S. manufacturing over the last decade. And small and medium size manufacturers (SMMs) are adapting with favorable results.
Two new trends are shaping the future of SMMs, says Jerry Jasinowski, president of the Manufacturing Institute, the research and educational arm of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). “First, large manufacturers are increasing their dependence on suppliers of components as they streamline their operations to increase productivity.”
A container isn’t just a container anymore. Today, "smart containers" curtail cargo theft and can deter terrorism. But problems remain.
By utilizing various technologies, including ultrasound, radio frequency identification (RFID) and satellite technology, containers can be equipped with devices that detect door openings, changes in light, temperature, vibration and more. For example, e-seals, RFID-enabled seals that fasten to a container door, provide wireless alerts if tampering occurs.
There are nearly 400 regional trade agreements either in force around the world, signed but not yet in force, or being negotiated, according to the World Trade Organization. And the number is anticipated to grow at an accelerated rate.
Not surprising, many of these agreements have evolved into trade blocs, such as the 27-member European Union and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations. And as they evolve, their global negotiating strength increases as they capture more and more global trade and investment.
